The Marcus Family

A solid track record in business, devoted to family and committed to the community — is a classic American success story. Ben Marcus, a Polish immigrant, started from scratch and built a portfolio of businesses that today are leaders in their industries. The Marcus Family of Businesses has demonstrated a remarkable capacity for growth and reinvention for more than 70 years.

Ben Marcus financed his first movie theater in the mid-1930s in Ripon, Wisconsin. He spent the next 35 years building a portfolio of businesses that included hotels, movie theaters and restaurants. In the mid-1970s, the businesses were recapitalized through an IPO, becoming what is The Marcus Corporation of today.

The Marcus Corporation serves as the primary investment vehicle for the Marcus family. Since its inception, it was led by Ben, and now by Steve, his son. Today, Marcus Investments LLC and Berengaria Development offer new opportunities for the family and its partners to build businesses with the same operational savvy and quiet persistence that has been the Family’s hallmark.

The Marcus Corporation has two divisions, Marcus Theatres and Marcus Hotels and Resorts. Marcus Theatres currently owns or manages almost 700 screens at locations in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, North Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska, including a family entertainment center in Wisconsin. In 1962, the Pfister was purchased by Ben Marcus, who vowed to renovate the distinguished hotel to its original beauty.  Significant renovations were completed and a new 23-story guest room tower was added. An extensive art collection continues to grace the walls of The Pfister today.
