R.M.S. Berengaria

TIMELINE

First Generation

  • 1925: Ben Marcus immigrates to the United States aboard the R.M.S. Berengaria

  • 1935: Ben Marcus opens his first theater in Ripon, WI

  • 1940: Ben Marcus purchases Tosa Theatre in suburban Milwaukee and enters the big city market

  • 1949: Ben Marcus builds the first of 14 drive-in movie theaters

  • 1958: Ben Marcus opens his first Marc's Big Boy Franchise on Milwaukee's north side

  • 1960: Ben Marcus opens his first hotel in Appleton, WI called "The Guest House Inn"

  • 1962: Ben Marcus purchases The Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee

  • 1967: Ben Marcus opens his first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise

  • 1969: Ben Marcus opens his first Captain's Steak Joynt

Second Generation

  • 1972: IPO of The Marcus Corporation (MCS)

  • 1972: MCS purchases The Sheraton Schroeder Hotel in Milwaukee (currently named The Hilton)

  • 1974: MCS opens the first Budgetel Inn in Oshkosh, WI

  • 1979: MCS operates 83 theater screens, 109 restaurant units and 13 hotels and motels

  • 1988: Steve Marcus becomes the CEO of MCS

  • 1990: MCS secures Applebee's franchise in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois

  • 1995: MCS sells the 18 Applebee's franchise locations for $50M

  • 2001: MCS sells the remainder of their restaurants: 31 KFC locations

THIRD GENERATION

  • 2004: Baymont Inn & Suites is sold to La Quinta for $420M

  • 2006: David Marcus starts Marcus Investments (Marcus Family private office)

  • 2008: Berengaria Development formed

  • 2009: Greg Marcus named CEO of The Marcus Corporation

  • 2010: Marcus Investments purchases Verlo Mattress

  • 2010: Marcus Investments starts Hospitality Democracy restaurant group

  • 2012: Berengaria Development expands operations nationally

  • 2015: Marcus Family celebrates its 80th Anniversary in business

  • 2016: Christopher Nolte named President of Marcus Investments

  • 2016: Berengaria Development opens it's 70th Goodwill store

  • 2017: Jay Peirick named President of Berengaria Development.

  • 2017: Berengaria opens it's 90th Goodwill Retail Store & Donation Center

  • 2017: Berengaria acquires Porter's Vale Shopping Center in Valparaiso, IN

  • 2018: Berengaria acquires Grafton Commons in Grafton, WI

  • 2018: Berengaria acquires Parkway Centre North in Grove City, OH
